Hello, I am having trouble determining if a senior living facility that has a memory care unit, should be treated like a Healthcare Facility and require each bed room as if it was a patient care area; or considered a limited care facility excluding the need for redundant grounding hospital grade devices.

This project is based on the 2011 NEC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kevin

I was afraid of that, but at least the assisted living floors can receive typical wiring and devices.

Thanks for the feedback.

Type of treatements/procedures expected to be performed should have an impact on this.

If no invasive procedures are expected to be performed it might not even be considered an Art 517 application at all.

OK I’ll take on the role of the stupid Englishman.

What is a memory care facility?

I have the web for anything useful after I’ve kicked the bucket, I don’t like the sound of someone sucking my thoughts out! I may be old but I have full control of my bodily functions.

The facility does not have an exam room, which is why I didn't think that article 517 would apply; however, the building is classified as Institutional.

The institutional classification paired with the Memory Care wing, and the special systems associated with the unit, like wander guard, and WON Doors have raised some concerns with the project.

Thanks for the feedback kwired, I'm hoping for some clarification to allow typical branch wiring.

Is this an "Alzheimer unit" in a nursing home where it is the patient's home so to speak? NEC wise I don't think anything is different in those areas then other resident rooms in the nursing home, other then higher levels of securing those people from leaving the space for their own protection, and you may even find they don't want electric receptacles in some areas of that space for the protection of those occupying it.

An exam room or procedure room would start to get more of 517 involved though, but the patient is going to have more supervision in such rooms.

Yes, patients with Alzheimer's, are going to live in this wing of the facility, other area include assisted, and independent living as well.

I will have to go back to the MEP Engineers and get some clarification in writing.

Thanks again for the feedback.

IN NC, assisted living memory care would not require 517 to be met. Our assisted living facilities are also I-2. Nursing Home is where the 517 requirements would be enforced.

What is a memory care facility?

not a stupid question at all....

we just passed legislation in this country to enhance this.
The acronym "ISP" now stands for "information sold for profit,"

a memory care facility might be verizon, comcast, or any
large ISP. they now care for your memory, by faithfully
recording every single thing you do on the internet, and
selling that information to people interested in you.

those people can now remind you of things you thought
you thought, and are now being told you thought. see
the term "gaslighting" for clarification.

as keywords in your post are = kicked, bucket, sound,
sucking, old, bodily functions....

expect to see banner ads for footwear, ULine, Apple Music,
assorted adult web sites, Altzheimer's services, and Pampers.

and we thank you for surfing Big Data!

I think we need a Sarcasm tag now :p

The AL I just did had a Memory Care ward, wandering devices etc... We considered it residential except the hallways, common areas, kitchen. We did have 2 nurses rooms where some one can get there blood pressure taken. That was considered health care. Nothing else.

I'd go over it with the local AHJ. You don't want any surprises.
