Is there any reason why a standard metal 1900 (4"sq) box can't be used outside under a steel canopy? These boxes are galvanized and would let moisture out as called for in 314.15 ('08 NEC here) but I could find no actually damp location listing.

I went through this situation and called Raco to get a listing. They are not listed for damp locations.
I also think even though its not listed for damp locations, electricians have been doing this for years including myself without any problems.

Flush mounted - one has to question if it is any longer a damp location if proper cover is installed.

Surface mounted - likely a violation.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't find a listing and the local inspector here was giving me a hard time even though it's dry under this canopy. His boss ended up giving me the go ahead, even though it probably is a violation. Technically.
