I got my first experience messing with these fixtures yesterday. I came across a couple that would not light. Tried a new bulb - still nothing. The fixture looked pretty new. I opened it up to see how it worked and there is only a cap and a ballast. Is it the cap or the ballast that usually goes out?

it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

There are several taps usually, make sure the correct tap is used for the voltage you have. The cap is cheaper, replace it before the ballast, I guess. Try out a lamp that you know works first though. Remember, the socket or connections could be bad too. Check it's wired like the other fixtures.

Most HID fixtures that i have worked with have a transformer and a starter that make up the ballast.

BALLAST-
device that maintains the current through a fluorescent or mercury lamp at the desired constant value, sometimes also providing the necessary starting voltage and current.

Matt, If you get a job with a lot of fixtures, for 175.00 you can get a H.I.D. TESTER/ MOG (E-39).

It will test 70W-1500W HPS and MH, it works real good. No guess work.

if a MH light looks dim, it is usually the cap. I change out ballast, cap, bulb 95% of the time anyway though.
