A quick question......I cannot find anywhere in the NEC in 410 for Luminaires if we are allowed to hard wire a Highbay Metal Halide. I know that if it is cord connected we have to utilize a Grounding receptacle, but what if we were to use MC Cable? Is that allowed? To install a whip from a j-box above?

110.3(B).

That's a little broad of an answer. I was hoping for a little more input. I am putting together a bid and the plans show Metal Halide fixtures suspended at 20 feet AFF. I know I can hang them and wire them with SO cord and Receptacles, but I can save on not installing all of the receptacles, SO cord and strain reliefs.
I cannot at this time check Instructions for the Listed Equipment. (110.3B)
Thanks but I was hoping for a bit more of an answer.

You won't find a Code article that states, "It's permitted/not permitted to install high bay metal halide luminaires using MC cable."

There is no code rule that says these fixtures must be cord connected, just one that tells you how to do it if you want to. As long as the MC cable is installed per its code requirements, there is no reason not to use it.

We always cord and plug our low bays. Always. But we're usually also the ones to go back and change the ballasts/relamp/clean lenses, which all of us would rather do on the ground than in the confines of a manbasket.

Point taken......very good reason to cord connect there.....just trying to shave every little dollar to be in contention. Job will probably go at cost to some other morer desperate contractor anyhow. Seems to be the norm down here lately.

How about using Re-Loc? (manufactured wiring system) Much faster than pipe or mc. Fixtures can be ordered with cord long enough to drop to desired height, with quick connect already installed.

I have used that method as an employee. As a contractor I have yet to use it therefore do not know how to price it's use correctly. I guess you would takeoff the amount the quantities you wish to use and send it to the Lighting Rep for Quotation...???
