metal halide lamp in a high pressure sodium fixture will it work. if so how long? the lamp is a 400 watt metal halide.

short answer is no.
what’s the wattage of the HPS ballast? The socket voltage and amps are different for the two.

the lamps require a different starting voltage

example. 400W MH is 250-305V
400W HPS is 175-225, but the current is much higher.
if the igniter did get it to go off the color won’t be right and it won’t last very long at all due to overwattage

grow lights??

There were retrofit MH lamps for HPS fixtures, whether they are still made have no idea and with the advent of LED doubtful if it would be worth it.

An incandescent will! LOL! I was working on a theatre years ago, noticed the wall pack at one of the outside exits was glowing dim. Opened it up, found maintenance had screwed in a regular light bulb into a medium base HPS fixture! LOL!

Used to be some said to screw an incandescent lamp in and if it lights up the ballast was good and if it still won't start correct, working HPS lamp then the ignitor was probably bad.
