In an indoor auditorium wiring project, metal halide lamp fittings were used in ceiling as a cost cutting measure to reduce number of fittings with LED fittings fixed on side walls. During a power point presentation that was mentioned. I expressed my appehension that a metal halide lamp is laible for violent failure and should not be used in such applications. Your comments please.

I am surprised an auditorium went with a lamp type that is poor for dimming and has a restrike time.

As far as end of life failure I would not be concerned, MH lamps are used indoors often.

NEC recognizes this as well. If the luminaire doesn't have an enclosed lamp then you must use a lamp designed for open luminaires. They are designed to not rupture as easily during such failures and are designated with "type O". 410.130(F)(5)
