Metal Junction boxes too far recessed in drywall...

Hi all,
I have a few metal junction boxes that are recessed too far behind the drywall. Bout 1" or so. I have found plastic extensions at Lowes, but not sure if that will work with metal boxes. Also the mudrings are only 1/4", so thats not enough. All the new boxes that were installed are fine, but the existing ones have this problem. This is what happened in short: The styrofoam insulation was doubled and 5/8 drywall was used on the walls.
Once the fixtures are put up I can use longer screws to attach it, but for now the junction boxes look like crap. The walls have not been painted so it will remain like that for awhile. I just dont want it drawing too much attention also.

Thanks for the help...

I'd probably use the Arlington BE-1 and BE-2 extension sleeves unless this happens to be a fire rated assembly. If so, the only choice might be to tear up the wall and re-mount the boxes or install the proper depth mud rings.

There is no reason you can't use the sleeves Marc talks about. They look like this

Thats a new one on me. Do they fit flush on the front of the box or does some of that sleeve go in the box? Any loss on the box fill calculations?

If you are under the 2002 NEC its not a violation. The 2005 NEC clarified the setback distance from a non combustible surface was for the box and box extension. It was just the box. An extension is not a box.

Thanks for all the answers,

Tom, from your reply are you saying that under '05 NEC if I use an extension it would be a violation?

I have both single and double gang boxes. Its all metal, in the kitchen.

I ended up using, yes its a no-no, a plastic extension for single gangs. Cant find any metal extensions here. For the double, Im still outta luck as I cant find any extensions locally.

I'll keep on trying to find a solution for that one...
