I need to cut in some sconce light fixture boxes in. The wiring method is MC cable. What do I use for a box, I have never seen a round old work box. I do not think I can use a single gang box as I believe I need to use at least 8/32 screws to hang the box? I could use a metal octagon box with ears but then how do I hold it into place? Would Madison hangers(f straps) work on these boxes as well?

If I absolutely had to use an octagon old work box, I would use these:

Hubbell 936 Raco Ceiling Fan Box and Support

Listed for MC.

I have used Madison straps with metal round old works, it would have to be a very light weight wall sconce for me to go that route.

They make a metal octagon box with ears and a clip mount that springs out when you push it through the hole and then tighten a screw in the back of the box . A metal octagon old works box.

I think they even sell them at home depot.

I have never seen a metal box with a clip mount. I even searched the Internet. If you could post a pic or a link or a part # that would be helpful.

Are they listed for MC?

These ceiling pan boxes have conduit knockouts or clamps for nonmetallic sheathed cable. They are used to mount ceiling and wall lighting fixtures when a shallow depth box is required.

Some things to consider.

read 314.27 to start with.

If the luminaire weighs less then 6 pounds you may even be able to support it with 6-32 screws from a device box.

If this wall needs to have a fire rating it likely needs to be supported from a structural member and not drywall only.

Personally I would use 1X3 strapping attached to the back of the drywall and screw the octagon box with ears to that. Unless of course these are very heavy light fixtures, in which case opening up the wall is the way I'd go and have them pay to re-sheetrock, plaster and paint.

Brace kits like the one in post #2 work great for that circumstance, no drywall repair needed.
