Metal satellite pole

Someone asked me today if I thought a metal pole that is 50' from a house and is only used to support a satellite dish needs to be grounded. Wouldn't the company that installs the satellite ground their satellite back to the homes service equipment thus grounding the pole that its mounted on or would an electrician have to ground the pole? Thanks.

Re: Metal satellite pole

Yes it must be grounded and bonded back to the building's grounding electrode system. However, most of the satellite installs I have seen over the years are grounded, but NOT BONDED to the building grounding electrode system. This is due to the fact that most installers are never trained on proper grounding and the NEC.

The few jobs that I have seen done properly were usually done by a licsensed EC who just installed it for a little side work.

Re: Metal satellite pole

What size wire would I use to bond the metal pole to the service equipment?
820.40(D) Bonding of electrodes. A bonding jumper not smaller than 6 AWG copper or equivalent shall be connected between the antenna systems grounding electrode system and the power grounding electrode system at the building or structure served where separate electrodes are used.

from 2002 NEC :)
