Metal utility poles!

First time I've ever seen one!
Anyone care to guess the reason the power company has for using these?

Dave,
It is my understanding that they are cheaper and lighter than a wood pole of equal strength. I recall that from something I read a few years ago, so with the increase in the price of steel they may no longer be cheaper.

Frank that was the best laugh I had all week.

Seriously here in Tucson the metal poles have been in use for a while. I also saw some that look similar to that deck material they make. Anything to keep the termites out.

Metal poles are fairly common and we have used them for about 30 years for transmission and distribution. We have yet to have any problems with termites. :D

I wonder if Bashlin is making a set of climbing hooks for metal poles that have big magnets on them instead of gaffs? :D
