I was looking over UL's web site for information about metallic outlet boxes. They say that boxes located on opposite sides of walls or partitions are intended to be seperated by a minimum horizontal distance of 24 in. this minimum seperation distance between the boxes may be reduced when Wall Opening Protective Materials are installed according to the requirements of their classification. Are they referring to a fire rated material being wrapped around the metallic box to keep the 2 hour fire-rating of the wall?
