Meter Can Height

Is there a code rule to how high a meter can be mounted. I have looked hi & lo through the 2002 & 2005 NEC and have not been able to find an answer besides readily accessable or is it up to the AHJ.

Re: Meter Can Height

That is up to the power company. Ask them. In most cases they want 5 to 5'6" to the center of the meter.

Re: Meter Can Height

Just a follow up to Don's post, it's not an NEC issue but a POCO issue. Most of the POCO's in my area require the height to be 4'6" to 5'6" to the center of the meter. However, there are some exceptions : 1) Where a walkway or driveway is within 2' of the face of the meter some will require the meter height to be 6'6" to the top of the meter pan in order to avoid accidental damage; 2) Where it is impractical to mount the meter pan under normal conditions due to the structure of the building some POCO's require a minimum height of 3'0" to the top of the meter pan.

Re: Meter Can Height

Also, every electric utility has different rules. We want 6 ft to the top of the meter cabinet or 5 ft to 6 ft to the top of a meter fitting. We also have exceptions to those rules and also requirements for the location. :D
