meter can question

regarding residential service, are there any square meter cans that are rated above 125 amps?

* specifically, the one i'm asking about is pretty old and appx. 3 inches larger than the meter.

.

Our local POCO used to have one on the approved list that was 200 amp single phase that was square. As you indicated it was about 3" wider and taller than the rectangular one. If I remember correctly, it used a bolt in style meter.

the can i'm wondering about isn't much bigger than the meter itself (appx. 3" from the outside of the can to the meter @ the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions) and definitely not 3" larger than any rectangular ones that i'm used to seeing. it's probably 20 + years old @ least.

* in general i'm asking if there are some services at houses that, from 15' away, w/o pulling the lid off the can and looking at ratings, wire sizes, etc.. an electrician would know what amp service was being provided and then specifically, if this were the case, with the older non-rectangular cans?

i'm downloading their catalog and am going to look through it in a moment.

are the cans made/sold today representative of what was available 20+ years ago with respect to their size and load ratings?

.

Hard one to answer. In my area yes it's pretty easy to determine size of service from meter can size and of course wire size out the weatherhead. Only because our POCO has specified the same cans for many many years.
