Has anyone ever doubled up wire in a meter can.I have a customer with a 200amp meter can with 2/0 feeding a 100 amp service.I thought about doubling up a 100 amp service with the 2/0 and feeding a garage. This would save space in his 100 amp panel in houe.I am not sure if meter can is listed for this type installation I have seen it in the past.Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Re: meter can

I was afraid of that I guess I should go out of the house panel. Thanks for your reply.

Re: meter can

Exception No. 3: A single-family dwelling unit and a separate structure shall be permitted to have one set of service-entrance conductors run to each from a single service drop or lateral.

230.40 Exception # 3 allows for this type of installation. I have seen 200 amp cans with double lugs can?t remember who supplied them.

Cutler Hammer has a 200 meter/main combo that has space for 2 service disconnects. In the setup referenced in this thread however, watch out for an additional 3 way running between garage and house. Then you would have more than one set of feeds to the seperate structure. To get around this, feed the garage panel from the house panel, and then feed the three way from the garage panel. The garage panel needs to have a main for a disconnect. Now if the garage panel is shut off, the three way travelers go dead also. All with one pull of the hand.

Re: meter can

Macmike man, wouldn`t the 3 way be considered a supply and not a feed situation. After all it is a switch loop and not a distribution situation??

I once felt the same way about this type of set up, until someone (Ryan or Charlie maybe?) pointed out, that 225.30 (D) alows for this. See the very last part of that section.

Eprice, I stand corrected. Thanks. It is the last sentence in (D) that I was speed reading right past, but now it has yellow highlighter to make me notice it. I knew having a three way for outbound garage was ok, but I have been using my other method or x-10's when there was a panel also, because of my misunderstanding. Again thanks.

Just checked the Milbank catalog. They have a 200A can with studs on the load side which will accept double lugs. Here is catalog page.

We have been using a 320 A socket here for years with studs on the load side. The local POCO (IPL) allows a maximum of 2 cables per phase.
