A home inspector did a home inspection and said that because the meter housing is the old fashion round type he suspects that the housing is only rated for 60 amps. The house has a 100 amp service drop, so he feels that the housing is not adequate for a 100 amp service. Does anyone know if round meter housings were only made for 60 amp services and nothing higher? The housing and hub are a one-piece cast metal alloy from the 1950's.

Some of the round ones were 60 and some were 100, so it is not accurate so say all round ones are 60 amp. FWIW, its not necessarily a code violation to have a 60 amp socket on a 100 amp service.

Also, note they are still available, for example:

Call the utility company and see if they have any problem with it.

If they install smart meters they may want it changed anyway.

Is the entire service original from the 1950's? What does it mean when you say it has a 100 amp service drop? 60 amp services were the norm for a long time.
