meter pedestals

Rececently while changing out an overhead meter socket to an underground meter pedestal, I pulled a 1 1/4 ko out the side of the pedestal. This was your standard Milbank 200 amp meter pedestal, with 4 ko's in the back and 1 on each side. The ko I pulled was on the side, at the same height as the top ko under the meter. The inspector warned me that I was in violation, and that I was only allowed to use the pre-punched ko's.

Does anyone know where he's getting this from, I looked in NEC, COMM 16, I even looked in the manual that the power company gave me.

I can see maybe a bending radius issue, but the ko I pulled was the same height as the pre-punched ko on the back of the ped.

ALSO: What about the ko above the meter, I've used it before and had no problem. But I'm told this is also inviolation. WHY??? WHERE????

Re: meter pedestals

The only concern I can see is if there is live lugs under the level of the ko. If there is, and a hub type of connector is not used, then water could wick in and follow down the wire to the energized lug, creating a hazard.

I can't quite tell from your question, but I think this is what you are asking.

The openeing above the meter is not a ko, but an opening, where you are required to install a hub or blank, approved for that type of can.

Don't get me wrong, you can punch holes just about anywhere, but above live parts you will need to use approved connectors, such as a Meyer's hub.

Hope this answers your question.

Re: meter pedestals

I recommend talking to the inspector and asking him what was wrong. We would be shooting in the dark and he has see it. :)
