This is the main disconnect (actually the only disconnect) in a house in Mexico. It has 2-30 amp fuses what appeared to be #10 wire. Is completely exposed....... About a 2000 sq. foot house with a small bussiness in one room.

I wonder if those idols have somthing to do with the proper function of that 'service equipment'?

In any event, that fuseholder and open knife switch is fairly typical of the 30 amp, 120 volt services that still exist here and there in my market area.

I like the spare fuse holder :)
Yeah... I was on a job a while back in which they had a Craftsman toolbox bolted to the wall to house the spare fuses. I put that in my memory bank, in case I need to do a similar thing.

Foreign wiring?

Foreign wiring?

In 1993 (I know, that was last century) in the mountains east of Mexico City I worked with church group building a parsonage. The route to the work site contained a number of grass shacks with a disconnect on stick in the front yard, and a huge sattelite dish out back, plus the above pictured "wiring".

What? This is not safe? It must be! It works dont it?

I see a lot of old 4 fuse panels hanging off the sides of houses in Katrina Land. A good wire brushing and a fresh coat of paint and they'd be all set to send down to Mexico for panel upgrades :)

Hey Julie it isn`t only Katrina land that has those antiquated services.I haven`t been there in quite awhile but I encountered many, many apts in NYC built around the early 1900`s that had retro fitted gas lighting that were served by a single 15 amp #14 gauge feed from 100`s of feet from the meter and all the appliances plugged in the available receptacles.

Wall sconces tapped off of and new receptacles installed.BTW the wall sconces were just plastered over.Unbelievable as it may seem the retro fitted electric was usually done with a 3/8 opening pancake box that had 4 openings for BX.When the wiring failed you had to remove the pipe cap and box, to get at the loop (hopefully) that was left in the cavity to strip and redo what was there. Many times I found the original gas system still in service.

Made you pucker up when you took a gas cap off a box and heard that dreaded shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh of natural gas.I bet there are still many buildings in this condition.
