Hey gents,

I’m quoting a job and which has existing Class 1 Div 2 fittings but thinking I may not need it all.

The client has a woodworking shop where there are three closed top, curtain front spray booths inside an open warehouse. He has now built a mezzanine above them and wants to add lighting for the mezz. He bought Lehs Class 1 Div 2 fixtures for the space, but my question is in the wiring method and I’m getting confused on the code wording.

I am well above the 10 ft above (closest probably 25 ft) so does that rule it not classified and I would be ok using EMT and 4x4 boxes? I’m planning to go above the min here but would help to know I am reading it right and anything else I choose is going above the basic.

Thanks

It depends on the NEC edition enforced; [2023] Section 516.7(A) is the general rule for wiring above and outside the classified location. Section 516.7(B) deals with equipment.

We’re still on the 2014.

I’ve read all of Article 516, I’m just wanting to make sure that I am interpreting it right. From how I’m interpreting as long as it’s in a metal raceway, and specific cable, it should be good.

But then there are other forums I’ve read online that say the whole room may be classified C1 D2 which is throwing me off.

This moves the goal posts a bit. The first thing is to determine that Section 500.4(A) has been complied with before you even began to “design” your work. Don’t know if the “other forums” are right or not. I don’t know what their basis of classification was.

If the work is actually outside and above the classified location, your interpretation is good - even in 2014.
