As I understand it, Michigan requires 15 hours of continuing education per code cycle for electricians. When should I be taking my classes?
I passed my journey exam a few years back on the 2002 nec. I was told I was exempt from needing an update a while ago. Do I need to have an update for the 2002 code cycle even though the 2005 is now, (or soon will be) adopted in Michigan? I have not heard (officialy) when Michigan is apopting the 2005 code. I have my 2007 licence from the EAB, but I'm wondering if I am still ok. I'd like to take my update on 2005 nec, and not waist time and money on an outdated code. Please set me straight on how this works.
Thanks in advance, John

Michigan CE question

John,

Michigan will not adopt the 2005 NEC until about september of this year.
You will probably have three years from this September to complete this course.

Yes, It's good to keep up on all the code changes. Taking a few hours a year is probably a good idea anyway, instead of cramming it all in for three years. I will keep an eye out for up-comming classes around here. It seems to me the 2005 should already be in effect in every state. I wish the Michigan website had more up to date info. Thanks for your input guys.

John

PS: Don't you wish every electrical code was the same from state to state?

John- It had been looking like the '05 would be adopted in September of this year. However, the provisions for requiring permits for tele-com work that were included in the Part 8 rules has ruffled some feathers. The tele-com people think they are, and should remain, exempt from permit requirement. They have a pretty strong Lobby in Lansing and are going to fight it. The State's position is that they are going to fight this battle now rather than later, so the adoption will be delayed until there is a decision one way or the other.

So, while it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a code update class just to be prepared, you won't be able to get your Act 217 credits which are required for your license renewal. In order to recieve credit for the class, you must take it AFTER the code has been adopted by the State.

Once the State adopts the '05, you have 12 months to complete your required 15 hour course. And proof of this will be required in order to renew your Journeyman's license. In reality, this usually works out to more than 12 months. For example, if a miracle occurs and the Code is adopted in September of this year, you won't need the update class to renew your license in December of this year, but you will need it to renew in December of '08. So you'll actually end up with 15 months to complete the requirement.

I just finished an excellent Code update class through the Michigan Chapter of IAEI. No Act 217 credit could be given for the class since the Code hasn't been adopted yet. Well worth the time and effort to take the class even though I'll need to take another one for my license renewal. We did, however, recieve Act 54 credits towards our inspectors registration, so it was helpful there as well.

Don't know what part of the state you're in, but once it gets adopted, PM me and I'll see if I can get you some information on upcoming classes.

Mich slow to adopt

Mich slow to adopt

Thanks JDR, the thing that seems odd to me is the process of adopting a new code. I heard early last year that the '05 was going to be in effect in Michigan in late '06. Then I heard January 1 '06, now its later this year. (Ok,September) It would be nice to know for sure so I know what code to study. Want to take my masters this year and I have been studying the '05 NEC. Maybe I should go back to my '02 book and just get the exam under my belt. Thanks for letting me know sir. I am not working now so I am sort of out of the loop of whats going on.
