Michigan being under the 1 and 2 family residential code, I would like opinions from other Contractors.

How are the AHJ's in your areas handling the wiring of pole barns that are located on the same property as the dwelling?

Are they using the heading Garages and Accessory buildings, or just flat out treating it as if it were built in a remote, stand alone location.

Thanks.

Zoning possibly comes into play? If zoned for residential only they about have to be dwelling accessory buildings. If zoned for agriculture use they are agriculture buildings. "Hobby agriculture" activities could be trickier to determine though.

I suggest calling your AHJ. All of Michigan is supposed to be on the same code, and how things are handled from one area to another in the state should not vary.

If zoned agricultural, there is no electrical code for Michigan. Also, we don't follow Article 547.
Sort of same here, agricultural installs are supposed to be exempt from requiring electrical permits/inspections, but some still get inspected for various reasons. Those that are true electricians still follow (or at least try to) 547 when the application applies. From my understanding a guy from NE was big player in getting 547 into the NEC several years ago now. I have been to seminars put on by that individual.
