In the state of Michigan, can a General contractor employ a master electrician to be his master of record to pull electrical permits or is it only an electrical contractor that can do this? If he cannot, what are the determining factors for which kind of buisiness can and which kind cannot.

Yes he can employ a master to pull his permits. Any one can get a electrical contractors license. You do not have to be a master electrician to hold a electrical contractors license. The master electrician has to send in his paperwork stating the company he is working for, and he now can only pull permits for that company. That was 1 question on the electrical contractors exam for Michigan. It is also in the public acts......I just cant remember which one:(

338.883b Electrical contractor's license; requirements.

Sec. 3b.

(1) The department of labor shall issue an electrical contractor's license to a person who does all of the following:

(a) Holds a master electrician's license or has not less than 1 master electrician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. That master electrician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of electrical wiring and equipment.

(b) Files a completed application on a form provided by the department of labor.

(c) Pays the examination fee and passes an examination provided for by the board and the department of labor.

(d) Pays the license fee prescribed in section 3.

(2) A person applying for an electrical contractors license under this act shall also pay the amount required to be paid under the construction lien act, Act No. 497 of the Public Acts of 1980, being sections 570.1101 to 570.1305 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, which amount shall be paid to the department of licensing and regulation for deposit into the homeowner construction lien recovery fund. A person shall not be required to pay more than $50.00 in an assessment period under Act No. 497 of the Public Acts of 1980, regardless of the number of licenses applied for or held.

History: Add. 1990, Act 246, Eff. Mar. 28, 1991

You mentioned gc you must have an ec license as well.

The question was about a General Contractor, he is not an electrical contractor. can he employ a master of record or does he have to be an electrical contractor to do that?(again he is not one). What are the rules that allow companies such as Ford Motor to have a master electrician pull permits without him working for an electrical contractor.

Yes I did. My question does not ask how to become an electrical contractor and as I explained the general contractor that I mentioned does not have an electrical contracting license.

He's asking whether any kind of contractor, such as a general, can employ a Master Electrician and pull electrical permits, or must the contractor be an electrical contractor in order to emply a Master Electrician and pull electrical permits. I say the latter; a GC can't just hire Masters.

In Virgina, specialty trades require a contractor's license in order to make contracts to perform such work. As an electrical contractor, I am only allowed to do electrical work. If I also want to do plumbing, I must both become a plumbing contractor and employ a Master Plumber.

I only posted a small portion of the regulations but they are all there just google them they say a GC is not an EC and therefore cannot employ a master to pull permits unless he gets licensed as an EC as well Which I am. Two totally diferent animals a gc and an ec. BUt the rules do differ from state to state. That is why I provided you with what your state required in a very small portion to the total document but seemed succinct to me at the time that a gc cannot hire a master to pull permits without makeing himself an EC as well. Took me .03 on the google search to get 14,787 documents stating that.

Sorry for the long delay, but here is the answer to your question on Ford or other manufacturing companies pulling permits without holding EC license in the state of Michigan.

ELECTRICAL AFFIDAVIT
The Electrical Division regularly receives questions on the applicability of licensing provisions in
the Act, regarding manufacturing companies or institutional facilities that use their own employees
to perform electrical installations or alterations to wiring systems, within their own buildings or
properties. In addition, the Division receives license examination applications from persons
employed in those companies or facilities that do not have documented licensed supervision.
In case of industrial or institutional employment, the affidavit is used in lieu of an electrical
contractor license. The signature of the master electrician on the affidavit provides the licensing
agency a means to verify the employment of licensed persons and letters of verification will bear the
signature of the master electrician and the employer.
