Microwave over oven

Gas or Electric Range or cook top? The building code requires 30" to unprotected surface above gas unless hood or appliance is Listed or Label for less.

Sorry, I meant to say an electric cooktop, and not an oven. This is an existing installation and I do not have the microwave instructions to give me the required clearance. Right now I have 14" between the 2 appliances. They seem to close together.

Did you try to go online and look for Installation Instruction of the Microwave Mfg..That might be your best bet to find the clearence information your after.

I don't think 14" is going to cut it.
I think you need 17" minimum (going from memory).

You probably got 14" because there more than likely was a hood fan above, where the upper cabinet was @30" above the countertop.

You will need whatever the minimum distance that the instructions that came with the microwave say. I'd guess 18" but I don' think that there is a standard distance unless it's part of the listing.

As a side note: Who is responsible for mounting the microwave? All we really do is supply the outlet/electric. Is it really up to us to say "yes" or "no" to the mounting. We are limited by the cabinetry aren't we?

Typically we don't give away electrical installations to other trades. We install the microwave and exhaust duct and charge accordingly. If they don't want to pay for it than that's a different story.

So if there is not enough clearance, manufactures requirement, between the stove top and the Microwave would you still install it?

We haven't been allowed to install duct work here for a long time. That would be exceeding the scope our license. The V in HVAC stands for ventilating.

While it sounds difficult, it's not too bad: if the customer is okay with the idea, detach the cabinet over the cooktop and reinstall it higher than the other cabinets.

There are usually screws between adjacent cabinet faces, and of course the ones into the wall. Don't forget to look below the cabinet bottom for screws, too.

No. I would let someone else do it since it would be a violation of 110.3(B).

I'm surprised that an electrician would be prohibited from installing a piece of metal duct and a cap. Who installs the piece of flex duct for a bathroom fan?

The HVAC contractor installs all duct work here.We wire it and thats it.Some builders here have gotten into contracting the appliance dealler for micro installs. We supply a receptacle and thats it,I`ve seen to many cabinets ruined or micro damaged and have been back charged for it.The profit isn`t worth the effort. The HVAC contarctor here can`t get a final until if it is a vented unit till it is installed,so why would we do the work they are paid for.Same goes for a vented hood we wire it and thats it.
