I just took the "Understanding the NEC, Vol. 2 exam" and found another brain teaser.
"#5. For listed explosionproof equipment, factory threaded entries shall be made up with at least _____ threads fully engaged."
Mike's correct answer is "4.5".
Read 500.8 (D), and Ex carefully, and tell me what answer i should use on the Master's test.

I would choose 5 threads unless the question specifically said, "for listed explosionproof equipment", and then I would choose 4.5 threads. If you have not got 4.5 as a choice, choose 5 and realize that the question is wrong.

In some locations, the key word to ask for the exception is "permitted", whereas "shall" means normally applied to. Best I can offer. Perhaps there are others more familiar with the verbage, and meanings here in the forum?

It's 500.8(E) Last sentence.

Real life says chase the threads of your pipe on factory pipe to get the Galv out of the threads to make a solid connection, especially if your going into a UNY or UNF. GUAT boxes are normally better.

"into explosionproof equipment is not the same as listed explosionproof equipment and Factory threaded versus field threaded" When taking an exam, slow down read the question more than once and be sure you don't leave anything out and that you don't add anything to it!" Two different worlds, One, walking around all day with your tools on, or Two, sitting on your behind beating on a keyboard and reading the screen. Environmental culture change!! Good luck:smile:
