I apologize in advance if this is not the appropriate forum for posting this topic, but it was my best guess.

I am making my way through the Mike Holt NEC training materials. I’m primarily focused on watching just the videos for now. I’m planning to do the readings and exercises thereafter. I also am in my 3rd month of an 11-month trade school Electrician Training Program and am finding all of Mike Holt’s materials to be very useful in my education. Mike’s program is providing me with both an intellectual and a pro-level understanding of the subject matter that supplements my school training and self-study.

That said, I have a couple of questions/issues with the Mike Holt videos and digital reading materials. I’m wondering if there is any sort of progress/bookmarking and/or highlighting/commenting available in either the videos or the digital publications. I’ve looked and there seem to be no such features. This would be a great oversight if it is to be the case, since having to resume in the middle of a 3-1/2 hour video chapter can be a bit of a challenging chore. Yes, I realize I could make a note of this by hand, but it seems that would be a step back in time.

Also, it would be very nice to be able to highlight and add notes to the reading material, similar to what can be done with a PDF or Kindle reader. I’m surprised to not find these features, especially since tabs and highlighting is made out to be such a useful study/lookup aid when using the physical media.

Comments/thoughts appreciated.

This may or may not help, but I also am studying the material. I opted for the DVD versions. My strategy was to do this:. The first time I watched, I just watched. I didn't make notes. I also played it on VLC media player so I could increase the playback speed.

The second time I watched, I paused it a lot, highlighted the book, and highlighted and made notes in the code book.

The third time I watched I increased the playback speed to at least 1.5x and just absorbed it.

You don't realize how much you miss when you only watch it once and the fundamentals, chapters 1-4 of the NEC, and the grounding and bonding are the foundation. The stronger you are in that, the easier everything else will be

Hi, Sea Nile (aka senile). Your approach to using the learning materials sounds a lot like what Mike Holt recommends students do. I think it’s a good approach, but I don’t think it addresses the lack of some features that I think would make the experience a lot more digestible. Thanks for your feedback.

And the office needs to hear that feedback

Great feedback guys! Give me a call in about two weeks. We're recording UNEC2 next week but I have guys adding features to the video player and can add your items to the list if it's possible we will try to squeeze them all in on the next upgrade. - Brian House (352)445-1805

Hi Brian, OP here. Thanks for the reply. Seems like my timing is fortuitous. I’ve marked my calendar to call you on Thurs/Friday, March 9/10.
