I had to drive to Buffalo on Sunday for a job, 870 miles round trip (up Sunda back Monday), what if anything do you charge per mile (I charged normal hourly rates for my time).

I would normally charge for travelling xxcents/mile plus 80% of my hourly site rate for Sunday.

P.S. I am 60 miles from Buffalo. We could have struck up a sweet deal and saved you the travel.

Brian, don't worry, the fire alarm service companies charge $300 an hour on site and $150 for every hour of road time. You do have to consider, that most of them never have more then 2 hours of travel time, within their service area.

It costs me around .61 cents a mile to actually operate a truck (averaged among all trucks, not just service vans), not counting the driver. That about 36 bucks true cost for an hour of highway travel, plus normal markup for an item with a 36 dollar unit cost... viola.... 125 bucks. Naturally, I'm not charging for the truck once it "arrived" unless it is a specialized piece of equipment line a bucket truck or a digger derrick.

Thats why I said I like your figure. I think I will make some adjustments.

I used my dart board estimation system and SWAG'd .65 cents. Not a bad guess.

What did you use to arrive at this cost and life of truck, yearly maintenance, plus fuel cost, ECT.

Good topic going, I did a breakdown cost for the service truck, last year, not counting any miles, was $3.76 an hour, plus add the electricians burden, which will have his overhead included, remember, your not sending him out for charity work, than last of all, add in the miles.

Actually we do have a figure in our hourly rate to cover the over head of the truck. I was looking for the mileage charge as an adder for the jobs we do excessive (not sure on the definition of excessive travel) travel for.
