A friend of mine was given an old military trailer mounted generator. He says it looks to be 30 or 40 yrs old.

I've not seen it but he says on the nameplate,it says 400 htz.

Was this common? Is there any way to convert it to 60 cycle? It will crank and run fine btw.

Re: Military Generator

The military uses 400Hz to run radar equipment.

Using the formula f=NP/120 where:

f=frequency
N=speed
P=# of poles on the gen

Unless you change the speed or number of poles, you won't be able to change the frequency.

Aircraft use 400 hertz for their avionics. He may be able to sell this unit to a FBO at a local Airfield, that has a electronic and instrument repair business.
