Wire alot of custom homes and I need to periodically find buried j boxes in drywall or stucco usually about an inch deep. Is anybody aware of this product ( greenlee wire Finder/ Mini Locator #508s ) and whether it would suit my needs its available on ebay for $250.00 ? fair price ? Trying not to invest much more

any info appreciated TIA

I've used that one before, but before Greenlee had their name on it. Greenlee has, over the years, had already successful products re-branded with their brand name. One popular for instance was the old BHEA gas lamp tester, which now bears the Greenlee name.

That 508s formerly featured the Progressive Electronics label. I guess Greenlee bought them out now. It was a decent tool then, and it looks identical to the one I used, so I suspect that it has not changed.

It will certainly give you a tone through stucco, but I'm not sure how valuable that will be to you, unless you know about what height your box was. That is to say, you'll get a tone from the wire leading to the box, as well as the box. If you have a 'feed in' and a 'feed out', going in opposite directions, and you've pigtailed, you might not have any better idea where the box is even after you've located things out.

Another popular buried box locating tool:

Hold out for an amprobe 2005 series

and learn how to use it correctly. You will be blowing past anyone else at cable location it is the best locator yet a little complicated to use. Believe in the results. It is by far the best tracer I have used in 30 years and I have used many of them. I picked up mine on E-bay for 405$

I agree, if you're a contractor or you are giving purchasing advice to your boss, the Amprobe AT2005 is the one to have. If you're an employee, and you just got your tool allowance reset at the beginning of the year and it's burning a hole in your pocket, the 508s isn't too shabby for basic stuff. Hotter than a Fox and Hound type telephone man toner, but not as good as full featured toners.

Progressive is now Tempo, a part of Textron (Greenlee's parent company).

I figured as much. I wonder what happened to BEHA? They made some other cool stuff, which I havn't seen in years. I think they were a German company, if I'm not mistaken. Their gas lamp tester is the only thing I've seen with the Greenlee label.

"Progressive Electronics, Inc. of Mesa, Arizona (now known as Greenlee), is the world's largest manufacturer of small portable tone test sets and inductive speaker probes. Founded in 1971, Progressive Electronics has continued to grow and to develop new products such as cable and fault locators, wire mapping tools, test telephones and measurement equipment used by the installation and maintenance technicians in many industries. These industries include telecommunications, electrical, electronics, voice/data, HVAC, security/alarm and irrigation"

Beha is still around (Select "English" when you get there!). They make their own stuff. Greenlee just buys it and sticks their name on it.
