I am looking for some help with the type of question to expect on the Minnesota 2005 Masters exam. If someone has taken the Minnesota 2005 Masters recently, any information that you could pass on would be greatly appreciated.;) ;)

June 1st Minnesota adopted the '08 NEC. That won't significantly change the exam by more than a few questions but they're big changes. It's been a while since I took it so I can't help you much. I took a prep class that really helped. The prep class explained everything well. My advice would be to take a class. Know everything they cover and you'll be good. They typically don't cover anything that's not on the masters.

Good Luck!

Where did you learn that?

Take a look at the Proposed Permanent Rules Relating To Electrical Code at the Board of Electricity page.

Depending upon the results of the proceeding with the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), the target date of July 1 may, in fact be somewhat later. The ALJ is involved as there were a number of proposed amendments to the 2008 NEC.

From the May 22 Board minutes:
Judi Rubin (MEA) asked when the examinations will be based on the 2008 NEC.

Schultz stated that it’s an open book examination, and for the 2008 NEC, there’s one new article added for this code and because of its limited scope, it’s unlikely that any examination questions related to this article will be included in the first examination editions.. The rest of the knowledge areas are all in the 2005 code. The current plan is to begin basing the examinations on the 2008 NEC on the effective date of the 2008 NEC.

I took my masters test last year. It was nothing like the journeymans I took in 2001. There was none of the typical stuff like range calculations, VD, only 1conduit fill. There was a lot of multiple choice questions that had you choose the best two or three. I think its easier now that you can use the code book for the entire test, it also seemed more straight forward, it use to seem like they would word the question so confusingly that you had to read it a few times to even figure out the question.

I was way off on that one! Thanks for the correction. Why I had June 1st in mind I don't know, but's inexcusable and I stand corrected.

I haven't been following board minutes and this is a good indicator I should start.

Thanks . . .
You're welcome.

Wish I actually knew something about the current test. It's been a long time since I took mine.

Anyone?

All~

I've spoken/emailed John Schultz directly in regards to when the NEC 2008 would be adopted in MN. It won't be probably until this fall sometime. The statement in regards to the test will slightly change is ture, but at this moment just study the 2005 NEC.

As far as questions on the test - I do have 60% of 3 times of the Journeyman test written down and willing to share. I'm not sure if the Masters will have these questions or not, but it gives you an idea of what they are looking for.

I also know of some people going to take their Master's here soon, so I'll see what I can learn from them.

The prep classes are okay, but they don't know what is on the test. They just run you through everything in 2 days, cramming essentially. If you want to spend the $$ you can. But from the recomendation of John Schultz, don't waste your money. He said just know your code, and know it well. The better you know your way around in the code book, the questions won't be that hard. Of course there is the calculations that everyone needs to brush up on, but don't get too over worked about it.

If you go to the homepage for the MN Dept of Labor & Industry Electrical Licensing and Inspection you will find the official text concerning the adoption of the 2008 NEC.

As many electrical professionals in MN know, the hold up has occurred because of requests for amendments to the 2008 NEC, some of which threw the process of the Board of Electricity into the Courts.

An Administrative Law Judge took the pros and cons for amending the 2008 NEC under advisement and issued a report that recommends that Minnesota adopt the 2008 NEC, unamended. This report is 25 pages long, and, from my somewhat twisted perspective, is an interesting read.

Given that Fall starts towards the end of September, I suspect we'll see the enforcement of the unamended 2008 NEC start yet this Summer.

Al~

When i responded the first time in regards to the Adoption of the NEC 2008 in the state of MN, the information at the present time said early fall.

I read through what you posted and went to the Department of Labor's website and read up on it again. The main concern for me at the time was wether or not next Wednesday if the test was going to be on the NEC 2005 or the NEC 2008.

Thanks for passing along the information.
