Has anyone taken the Minnesota exam recently. I have taken it twice. The questions are often paragraphs, the wording is super confusing and not in line with traditional testing formatting nor any study materials. Simply understanding the question is more of the test. None of the testing materials I have purchase even remotely resembles the actual test. I have a BA in computer science yet this was the hardest test I have ever taken. The questions and answers are wordy , often there are two answer that are reverses worded with but containing pieces of the correct answer. Oftern time three of the four multiple choice contains a piece of the correct answer. The test is not about how well you know the code but more about how while you can take a test. It’s designed solely to pile up failures. Has anyone come across the correct representation study materials. Help.

There is a town that I know of that gave 2 different set of tests. One for the locals and one for those from out of town. Guess which one was the hardest to pass !!
Even a man (from out of town) who taught the code & had multiple master licenses from many towns) took the test & failed. When he meet with the board about the test, & after explaining things to them, they offered to give him his license in the town. He refused it & stated that he did not want a license with that town! Haven't gotten my results back but man its overwhelming. The question often make no sense. No study material can help you. Purchased study materials are simply a waste of time and money. If it was knowing the code I would ace it. Finding code, no problems, calculations can pass. The thing is the memorized formulas will not help you.

I'm curious of the recent exam layout because I have heard mixed reviews from people I know that have taken it. Did you have 80 or 100 questions? How long were the questions, a few lines or a decent size paragraph? Lastly was it A,B,C,D or A,B,C,D,E multiple choice?

80 questions
A - D
Most all are aparagrphs
Class A Journeyman and Masters take the same test
Contractors take a different test.

As for study material I used mike holt test materials, nec handbook, soft cover codebook, and constant searching on this forum. I went page by page because the holt books miss many details compared to what the nec actually says. For what I know the journeyman and master test are not the same but do have many similarities. Its probably hard to believe but the difficulty has been lowered in recent years. The older tests had A,B,C,D,E to choose from and you had to pick which of the 3 best answers on some questions. The questions were worth 1 point no matter how many steps or answers there were.

It's been about 8 years since I took the Masters test in MN. Yes, they put everything in a paragraph to try to confuse you. You need to pick out the correct info you need to answer the question and disregard the rest. I had an apprentice finally pass it after 5 tries a few months ago. I know the exam prep courses offered by the MN Electrical Association are really good and they will have similar practice questions as they get feedback from students who have taken the test. Don't use a national exam prep course or materials, use a local instructor who will have knowledge of the MN test. I've taken classes from the MN Electrical Association and John Sunde with Sunde School and they are both excellent.
