I am following up on an older house that had knob and tube rewired to 12 gage romex. Originally I was told that the house had been completely rewired and visible wiring in the basement was new 12 ga romex. Upon closer examination, there is some original 14 ga tinned copper knob/tube wiring going to devices like switches and ceiling lights that are between the first/second floor and weren't easily upgraded.
The fuse box was replaced and all 20 amp breakers are installed. Is it ever OK to use 14 gage wire, even on lighting circuits, on a circuit that is fused at 20 amps?
