Homeowner friend of mine wired his own addition back in December 07 under my guidance to the 05 code, however he neglected to pull a permit until now! Problem is, the new AFCI requirement means that the required back of the house outside receptacle that he has coming off of his family room circuit will now be both AFCI and GFCI protected. AFCI protected because the family room circuit now requires AFCI protection, and GFCI protected because the outside receptacle is required to be GFCI protected. I can't find anything in the code that prohibits having a GFCI device on a AFCI protected circuit, and an inspector that I spoke to considers this to be acceptable. Any thoughts from others?
