Is anyone aware of any code issues with using a temporary/mobile generator for providing emergency power to an occupied building (NEC 700 system)? Delivery of the permanent gen is delayed, so contractor is looking to get U&O using a mobile unit until the permanent one arrives. I've reviewed NEC, NFPA 110, and NFPA 37, and it seems like as long as the requirements in those are met, there's no specific prohibition for this approach.

Isn't the generator required to start and provide power within 10 seconds? Can a portable unit do that?

Yes, you can use a portable generator. Using a portable generator when the permanent emergency generator is unavailable is the whole point of the requirements in 700.3(F).
