Mobile Home Compliance

I recently went with a freind of mine to look at their new 2006 mobile home. He was excited to be out on his own with his wife and three small children. As I walked around the home I started noticing various violations of the NEC. The first thing that caught my eye was the lack of arc-fault breakers installed for bedroom circuits and the kitchen only had one circuit for small appliances. I live in Camden County, Georgia and was wondering if these items are important enough to be included in the NEC then how can a company manufacture a product that is not code compliant. Is there an angency that I can contact to pose this question to? I thought of the County Inspector, however they are just inspecting the services and not the internals of the home as would happen with in normal construction.

Try these guys (below), they may be able to tell you something. Seeing that I'm not from your area, I'm short on answers. Yet, it never hurts to contact your AHJ.

Places that mfg. mobiles usually adopt codes that are 3 cycles or more behind. They either do this or loose thousands of jobs. You should see how they install outlets and switches.Pure garbage.

The federal HUD code applies to manufactured homes built since '76. See the HUD website for information on enforcement of this code. I don't believe that HUD requires AFCIs, but they do require two 20A small appliance branch circuits.

The HUD code overrides any local building code, but the local code applies to any additions or modifications made after the manufactured home leaves the factory.

The NEC has nothing to do with the construction of mobile homes.

Ultimately HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) is in control

Exactly! HUD is your answer! Heck, how could I forget?I guess the pic below will explain!!!. It's been some time since I had to deal with the devastation!! See below:

The above was one of many. They had gutters on top of the driveways. I almost died on this site: Non-service rated panel did not have the grounds isolated. Was hit by the equipment ground!! :(

Been a few years since i looked at any mobiles .At the time i qustioned the wiring and was told it complied to nec.We did not buy.A mobile that by the time its totally set up on lot with well ,septic, driveway, steps, skirting, lot, etc was over $90,000
