Can the service quadroplex feeding from the main disconnect on a mobile home, with a permanant foundation be run under the home without being installed in some sort of raceway? There will be skirting around the mobile home and I feel that this would still be considered an exposed application according to the code. If I were to install the cable in conduit would it still have to be buried 18" even though it is under the mobile home and not easily accessable>

Re: mobile home service question

You have to meet the minimum burial depths in Art 300, and the cable has to be protected where it comes out of the ground. Its a feeder not a service, right?

Re: mobile home service question

Here is what I posted in another thread As far as needing a raceway:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
24 CFR Part 3280
3280.803
Power supply.
(2) An approved raceway from the disconnecting means in the
manufactured home to the underside of the manufactured home with
provisions for the attachment of a suitable junction box or fitting to
the raceway on the underside of the manufactured home. The manufacturer
shall provide in his written installation instructions, the proper
feeder conductor sizes for the raceway and the size of the junction box
to be used;

3280.808
Wiring methods and materials.
(k) When outdoor or under-chassis line-voltage wiring is exposed to
moisture or physical damage, it shall be protected by rigid metal
conduit. The conductors shall be suitable for wet locations. Electrical
metallic tubing may be used when closely routed against frames, and
equipment enclosures.

(l) The cables or conductors shall be Type NMC, TW, or equivalent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is out of 24 CFR of the HUD codes that apply to manufactured homes. and it overrides State and local codes

The hud inspector here will allow it if there is a conduit from the required disconect within 30' of the trailer to the underside of the of the trailer. But I not sure what he is using to allow it? as 24 CFR 3280.808 clearly requires conduit.
And I'm not sure what you mean as a permanant foundation as you stated it also has skirting? As how can it have both? at least to HUD codes what a permanant foundation is.

Re: mobile home service question

The wire will be the feed to the panel from the main disconnect. No wires will be exposed (as far as outside of the home) because there will be trailer skirting. The wheels to the trailer will be taken off and the home will be permanant as far as that stand point. The wire will be suspect to moisture obviously because it is under the home, but it will not be accessable because of the skirting that will be attached to the trailer. In other words everything will be UNDER the trailer, enclosed by the skirting. Do I still need the RMC, if so can RNMC be used in the appropriate size?
Thanks you guys for your help!

Re: mobile home service question

Betsy
You asked in your last post, "Do I still need the RMC?"

Service equiptment within 30 ft.

Rigid nonmetallic under home (0 cover requirement)300.5 See also 352.30(B) for support distance.

Unless local codes require it, No - you don't need the RMC. Ridgid nonmetallic OK. In my area the PVC conduit is run on ground surface UNDER the home and secured per 352.30(B). A call to your inspector could'nt hurt.

Re: mobile home service question

Buck:
Service equipment within 30 ft.
Only the disconnect is required to be within 30' but not closer than 24"
This requirement is if the service equipment is father than this.
And you don't even have to run 4 wires between this disconect and the main servic just from the load side of it to trailer. Which I kind of don't like because any voltage drop in the grounded conductor back to the service will be imposed on all the grounding of this trailer. But it is in the NEC? 550.32 and 550.33(A) exception

Re: mobile home service question

These articles say not more that 30 ft from the mobile home and not more than 24 ins above grade, nowhere does it say not less than 24 ins from the mobile home.Just height requirement for service disc.

Re: mobile home service question

I also looked through 3280 to see if it was in the HUD codes but I couldn't find it But I have a booket at the shop that covers this from the State HUD AHJ that requires this so a fireman doesn't have to get to close to a fire to turn off the service to it. and I did look it up once and it was some where in their codes.

I JUST DON'T REMEBER WHERE!
Must be old age :p
