I have a question about possible gray area. This involves a double wide trailer placed on a permanent foundation. It is definitely a trailer, steel framing and could be moved if necessary.
Would putting a service directly on this mobile be legal according to NEC or should this service be mounted on a pedastal base. This is in private development so esthetics would play a part.

Re: MOBILE HOME SERVICE

If this home meets the definition of a "manufactured home" per NEC Article 550-2. and the installation meets the requirements of 550-23. Service Equipment, then the service equipment can be mounted directly to the home. The service should be installed per NEC 230. Services. In the area where I live, the AHJ requires a outside main disconnect located beside the meter and a 4 wire feed to the house panel. Check with your local AHJ to be sure.

Re: MOBILE HOME SERVICE

mulan, since you are the AHJ, check the manufacturer's instructions. If the service and meter fitting is permitted on the side of the mobile home, there will be instructions about where and how it may be mounted. A contractor may not just mount it on the skin without any solid backing for the equipment.

You also need to check with the serving electric utility. We do not permit the meter fitting on the side of any building in a mobile home park except for a large office/laundry/recreation building on a permanent foundation. We will permit a meter fitting on the side of a mobile home if it is not in a mobile home park and it has passed an inspection by the AHJ.

If you are not sure, tell them no and put the burden of providing the proper documentation from the manufacturer on them.

Remember, the AHJ is always correct. :D

Steve, this installation must meet the HUD regulations since they preempt all state and local regulations, laws, and ordnances. In the near future, the HUD regulations will reference the NEC. Until that time, we are under the federal jurisdiction. :D

Re: MOBILE HOME SERVICE

Glad you cought that one Charlie, as I found out this when researching the IC laws for around here All trailers manufactured after 1985 that are over 850 Sf. are in fact a manufactured home as clasifide by HUD and will fall under there rules!
Here in NW. Indiana. when mounted on a permanent foundation, They can have the meter mounted on the unit but proper support has to be installed to support the meter. and the install has to be done just like you would do a house and the unit would have to be done to the applying code.
