Modifications to Conduit Fittings

I have observed several instances where the covers for 2 and 3" LB fittings have been drilled and tapped to facilitate the installation of drain fittings.

Some of these instances were done in classified areas (CL I Div 2).

Is this in violation of the code. If so, where is this stated. I have spent hours searching for a section which addresses this issue.

Aritlce 230.53 allows raceways to be "arranged to drain". How this is usually accomplished, I don't know. I also think it is interesting that this is in Article 230 - Services. So can raceways other than the service conductors be arranged to drain? Again, I don't know. The hazardous location adds another complication.

Has anyone else ever arranged a raceway to drain?

Re: Modifications to Conduit Fittings

My experience with class listed conduit fittings is that they are listed as submitted by the manufacturer and any modifications voids that listing. I have always accomplished a drain point in the line by specifying a "T" fitting at the low point, or panel penetration with an explosion proof draing. More expensive because of the additional material, but clean. With what you had described, even if they are using an explosion proof drain, I would have to believe is in violation of code.

Re: Modifications to Conduit Fittings

Class 1 Division 2 areas do not require explosion proof conduit fittings, unless the fitting has been installed between an enclosure that is required to be explosion proof and the seal fitting. The modification of the fitting is likely a violation of the listing for the LB.

225.22 Raceways on Exterior Surfaces of Buildings or Other Structures. Raceways on exterior surfaces of buildings or other structures shall be rain tight and arranged to drain. (quote from the 2002 NEC)

I rewired a "Flume" ride and replaced all the rotted EMT with aluminum ridged.

At all low points I put an 1/8" hole for draining.

Most times this would be at an LB or box, I do not know if this would be a listing violation, but I do know water Always finds a way into raceways.
