I took these yesterday. Poco has been working to get 3? to the complex I'm working on. They show up yesterday morning with 2 bucket trucks, and I look up and see this.

When was the last time you saw someone gaff a pole? After talking to POCO I found out this gentleman is an apprentice, part of his training.

BTW, those distribution lines are not yet energized.

They have to gaff them all the time here, because they run through the back yards and I would say that 99% of the time you can't get a truck back there.

About a year ago we lost power here... went out at 2am to find POCO on the top of the pole in our backyard pulling down a transformer. We went back in, made some coffee the old fashioned way, gave it to them and said sorry we weren't closer to the street :)

A little off topic here but thought this was interesting. We had a power line down inside our plant a few years ago in a very difficult to access place. About 2am, snowing like crazy, 10 degrees, wind blowing 25 mph. Two guys in a big boom truck come from the POCO. They have to extend all the way out TO THE SIDE to reach the primary line fuses on a pole. I was standing by the truck and could see snow blowing UNDER the hydraulic feet on the side of the truck opposite the boom every time the truck bobbed in the wind. I'm sure they had done it before but the funny thing was BOTH guys were in the bucket.

All I could think about was "What the **** am I gonna do if this thing tips over?"

Rarely do I see a guy climb a pole anymore.

What's worse than a pole is seeing them climb a ladder to service/install a midspan drop. The guy is on an extension ladder, hooked to the insulated secondary wiring, installing a new drop.....hot. His connections were right in his face. It seemed like a really bad idea to me.
