So I'm new to this forum. I'm currently a commercial Journeyman electrician in washington state. I've just got my montana journeyman application approved. Under PSI testing rules it states " only factory tabs can be used on 2017 nec". My question is can I use " Mike Holts tabs" on my exam? I've called PSI who's the testing agency & they couldn't answer my question. So does any Montana journeyman know if I can use Mike's tabs ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm eager to start studying however don't want to study with nec tabs I can't use on the exam. Please let me know if anyone has experience with this? Thanks

The Holt tabs are fine. You can use any tabs that are not removable-IE the page must rip if you try to remove them. BTW, if you have passed the Washington exam you should do fine on the MT exam.

I would like to think they're "factory " as well. Hopefully someone from Montana can answer my question. Thanks

I took the master but it has been a fair number of years ago. I would judge the difficulty level about the same as many other states. As a side note, are you going to take it in Washington or are you going to MT to do it?

I would like 2 take it in washington if it's an option? Haven't researched it yet. Just assumed I would have 2 go to MT. Psi also stated that the only book I could use was NEC. I appreciate the info. Thanks

I think MT will still let you take it at a local to you location. Most states do but it often requires permission after you get approved to test. I've done a number of states exams in my home state of CO, including MT. For states that use PSI there used to be a request form on the last page of the Exam Bulletin but that seems to be gone. Check your approval letter for how to request a local PSI site. As a veteran of test taking at all the various testing companies I can tell you that the customer service is very poor for all of them and getting worse. To be fair, they do have thousands of types of exams they give, for hundreds of organizations, so it is hard for a rep to know the specifics of every exam. In addition, I have seen a number of times where the test center employees do not know the correct rules for a given exam and have refused people to sit for the exam due to things such as what is allowed. That is why it is critical, especially if you are taking an exam that is not local to the exam center that you have in your possession the official exam bulletin when you show up and fully understand it and stand your ground.

Getting permission to test locally is worth the effort as it obviously saves money and time but also reduces the stress level. Feel free to PM me if you need help.

Thanks so much this is valuable information & I'll look into my options. Greatly appreciated

What about highlighting the NEC for Montana exam? The psi packet said no highlighting but I’ve never heard of that. Would they really care if you highlighted your book?

Did you end up using tabs?

The exam bulletin says no notes or highlighting. That means the test center staff will fan the book(s) to see if they find any. Also note that indexing/tabs are not allowed either. Banning of highlighting and particularly tabbing for a trade exam is a bit unusual but not unheard of.

Awesome thanks for the feedback!

I took the exam last week and Mike Holt tabs were fine, highlighting was fine also. No writing notes or underlining or you can't use your book. The bulletin sent to me states two different statements:
1. National Electrical Code®, 2017 Edition (the codebook may have factory markings, highlights from the factory or candidate and with factory tabs only).
2. Reference materials must be unmarked, meaning no highlighting, underlining, writing and/or indexing may exist in the reference.

The proctor was fine with statement 1.
