Hello,

Thanks for the forum!
I am an electrician and was asked yesterday a pretty interesting question that I am afraid I almost certainly didn?t give a very good answer for.

The electrical company that I work for has been doing some work for a moderate sized business.
They are very much by the book and I really appreciate that. When they have electrical work that needs to be done, they call a licensed electrical administration company and licensed electricians come out and do the work.

Anyhow, these folks would like to generate an electrical safety protocol of sorts. They would like to have one of the maintence workers go around and do a checklist for preventive maintence of the electrical system. He asked me to help draw out the plan, and I was not really sure where to begin. I really commend them for going to this step, and I don?t want to fail them. I of course said the obvious things.
GFCI tests
Continuity tests on extension cords
General inspections of cords and cables.
Visual inspections of panel boards and OCPD?s
general inspection of all cord connected loads

Would you folks suggest thermal readings of devices and equipment?
This would include OCPD?s and motors.
I was thinking that this could be done in-house with the proper task trained non-electrical licensed maintance worker that was employed by the company. They would like to handle the inspections in-house

I am sure I am missing a number of important issues, so any help would be great.
Also, how do you guys feel about non-electrical trade persons performing these tasks?
Thanks in Advance!

Depending upon the age of your facility, I would recommend an IR (infrared) scan be preformed. You either need to purchase an Infrared camera or probe, and start at the oldest part of the facility. Check connections, that is what is most important. My recomendation is: if your facility is 10-20 years old start now. You may only find 1-5 spots. The older the facility the more spots. You could find up to 30-50 spots the 1st time. This should be done every year after.
There are companies that do this on-site for you.
