And what is wrong with that? I have worked for the prison system for almost 20 years now and have had inmates work for me that were good elect. but I would not want them working around my house. The most were in for drug or alcohol violations but their are some, lets say if I saw them with in 50 ft of my grandchildren I would put a bullet in them.
 
I guess they're trying to keep sex offenders and such from obtaining licening? I don't know. With the information given, it sounds like they want the background check for new applicants, but it's unclear how that information will be utilized. I think many licensing requirements have requirements that the applicants be of good character, so I guess that's what they're trying to confirm. I'm torn on how I feel about it.

I realize I don't need a back ground check, but new applicants do.
I just think the Patriot Act & DHS are getting out of control.
 
i'm pretty sure florida requires that for EC's, even those seeking reciprocity. When I submitted my app to get grandfathered on my builder's license in GA i had to submit to a background check.

When I worked at the CVG airport in Northern, Ky I had to get printed & a background check and had no problem with that. If you are working in Federal buildings, airports, prisons, classified areas and security installers, I agree background checks should be required, but a background check just to get a contractors license is ridiculous.

I think this is just something that they require to abide by the US Patriot Act. If you look at the Exam Application pages 5 - 6, it will give you a list of those that can't qualify.

I got my Commercial Drivers License last year. When getting a Haz-Mat endorsement I was required to do the same check. Once I passed the background check I could take make Haz-Mat endorsement.
 
In our jurisdiction, this year they instituted a new policy. All, even ECs who shelve their licenses (like I do) are required to prove that there is no outstanding money owed to divorced wives and the kids. Even if you are not even married, it has to be documented and notorized.

the state of Georgia will TAKE your license if you own child support, alimony, or default on a student loan. I don't know any EC's that lost theirs because of this, but I know the Board of Realtors is extremely strict with this policy. Over 50% of their revocations are because of student loan defaults. Our Board of EC's is very lenient in handing down penalties. You can go online and read the board orders; all kinds of stories about EC's taking money and not doing the work to massive code violations. All they ever hand down is a fine and probation. I can only think of two revocations I read on there; one was because the EC lied about a felony charge (no background check, someone turned him in) and another lied about his experience. I think the guy with the felony charge had his license revoked but was going to get it back in 12/mo and had to pay a fine.
