680-22 requires all metal parts of a pool installation be bonded together, however it states that this bonding wire need not be connected to the service equipment. But then it goes on to say junction boxes must be bonded. Does this include the motor disconnect; in other words, do you attach the #8 to a lug on the outside of the DC to bond it to the nearby pump and heater in addition to the EGC inside the DC?

Re: more on pool bonding

Pipes conduit disconects only have to be bonded if they are within the 5' from the inside wall of the pool.

Re: more on pool bonding

Thanks Wayne. What is confusing to me is when we are called to follow up on a home inspector on an older installation he always writes up to bond the motor and heater (even when they are remotely located). So we bond together the motor and the heater and do not attach it to anything else. It would not be practical to run a bonding wire back to the main bonding grid on many of these installations as they are quite a ways away and there is decking etc, and I am unclear as to whether it would be required anyway. So I guess we are doing it right, just bonding the motor to the heater (on units more than 5 ft from pool)?

Re: more on pool bonding

I agree 680.26(B)(5) requires the bonding of the items listed in it.

I don't see that article saying you dont have to bond the pump motor or the pool heater if it's more than 5ft away from the pool.

680.26(B)(4)gives the requirements of the pool pump motor bonding.
680.6(E) covers the heater bonding..

Pool pumps and heaters regardless of how far they are located from the rest of the pool bonding grid are required to be bonded to the pool bonding grid, not even a maybe, but definitely.
We just had a situation where the pool was not bonded and the panel feeding the pool (PVC raceway) was not bonded or grounded. $25,000.00 later after excavating the concrete deck, and running a new set of feeders, we were finished and the homeowner was happy - safe. The pump and heater are located about 35 feet from the location of the pool.
