I find that I can hold a hot wire while well isolated of course and make my Micronta proximity detector glow. Maybe Sam will explain this?

Re: More proximity indicator stuff:

I used to use a neon tester when I was working with K&T to determine which wire was hot. I would hold one end of the tester and touch the other to a wire; if it glowed, it was hot. I was always on a wooden ladder when performing this type of function. This type of operation is outside the realm of safety today but I didn't think anything about it when I was working in the trade. :D

I don't think Sam's electron microscope is working yet.He told me it was still in the shop the tech can't figure out whats wrong with it. :D LOL

Re: More proximity indicator stuff:

Charlie, I still use one of those testers, and the current is so miniscule that you don't need to be isolated.

In fact, I sometimes have to ground myself in order to get an indication.

Hello Rattus

Charlie if you where insulated that good from ground how did you know which was hot and which was grounded?

Re: More proximity indicator stuff:

Charlie nevermind I thought you said you held one wire and touched the other wire with the neon tester.

Re: More proximity indicator stuff:

Interesting. I never got used to being shocked so I never grounded myself. However, I did have to have the area rather dim to see the glow. :D
