are arc fault breakers required for motel rooms. As in residential homes.

210.12 specifies Branch Circuit AFCI protection in dwelling units. Should motel suites meet the definition of a dwelling unit having independent living facilities, then yes. rbj

Does the motel room qualify as a dwelling unit?

Take a look at 210.18

210.18 Guest Rooms and Guest Suites.
Guest rooms and guest suites that are provided with permanent provisions for cooking shall have branch circuits installed to meet the rules for dwelling units.

Do you think sprinkler systems lift the requirement for afci's in motel rooms?

Why would they?
They are putting sprinklers in houses and you are required to use AFCI.

Sprinklers are designed to extinguish a fire.
AFCI are designed to prevent a fire from starting.
