Motion control

Installed some LED strip lights in the nosing of a staircase and was going to control them through a homeworks panel. Today the owner asked about turning them on through motion top and bottom of stairs. Can anybody give me some type of control to start looking into. There is a tapered post at the bottom of stairs that is about 6'' x 6'' sq, control could be line voltage or low voltage

We've installed systems that switch stair lights on with a security pad placed underneath the carpet on the first and last step.
With the low voltage as an option you can really set up anything that a security system could use as an alarm contact and then just set up a timer to keep them on for x amount of seconds after a break.
