I ran into a Retire guy who worked for years with 3-phase motors, mostly Allen-Bradley and Square-D.

He has a garage full of 3-phase Motor starters, along with Heaters; and also many relays and microswitches that he wants to get rid of.

Is there any code requirement about using Used but workable motor starters and relays.

None specifically prohibiting it......read early 110's. I would think depending on what kind of work you do, many plans spec "new equipment" and would not try and pass it off, if you work in a plant or industrial setting - why not!

I see nothing wrong whatsoever with resuing used, but servicable starters.

A lot of this kind of stuff is sold on eBay, so there oviously is a market for it.

There are a LOT of companies buying up used parts like this for in house projects, and as part of rebuilding equipment for resale.

Good question.

My orbit has always been the government arena where all supplied material was required to be 'new and domestic'. I have, on occasion, installed material that is known in the trade as NOS, "New Old Stock". Always wondered about the legality.

As far as installing used equipment, would you put your reputation on the line?

I never did.

Takers anyone?

If you are putting used but servicable motor starters on a 10 year old machine what difference does it make? As long as you are upfront about it, i just do not see a problem.
