I looked at a exhaust fan motor today. Motor is 1/8hp 120v. When turning the motor on, the motor makes a loud humming noise and doesnt spin. Took cover off and spun the fan by hand freely with no issues so ruled out a bearing. My thinking was maybe the start winding is out of the motor as the motor has no capacitors. Is my thinking correct on this?

The bearings could still be bad. The shaft could be binding due to it being pulled off center when the motor is energized.

If no start cap, how about start windings and the centrifugally-operated switch?
Thats what I was leaning towards also. Didnt have a megger with to check for sure.

If it's got good 120v and it's an 1/8HP motor, it's probably cheaper to replace it than troubleshoot it.

I was thinking of that also but it did not seem likely on that small of a motor.
