I was recently asked by an process operator to install a disconnect switch at equipment location.

Conveyor motor is located in a Class 2 Div 1 area.

Questions:

1. Can't tell if the motor is rated for area classification, is there something on the nameplate I can look for? I read "Class G", is this the right application?

2. Do I need to specify a NEMA 7/9 for disconnect switch or can I get by with a NEMA 4X?

3. There is a handstation control associated with equipment, I assume dust ignition proof will be required.

4. Did not see any conduit seal offs? Is this req'd for class 2 or only a requirement for Class 1?

Do you have a code book? If so take a look at 502.125(A). The motor should have a label to indicate it is in conformance with this rule.
502.1(A)(1) or (A)(2) is the section for the disconnect switch. If (A)(1) applies you will need a dust ignitionproof enclosure. The same rules apply to the control station. In general seal off fittings are not required for Class II applications. Look at 502.15. Note all code citations are from 2005.
