For 1/3 HP or less, per 210.21(B)(1) Exception 1.Should run with on a 20 amp circuit with a no problem.
First of all a 3/4 HP sump pump is not really a 3/4 HP motor, its marketing. Most 3/4 HP sump pumps I run across show around 10 amps on the label. If a 3/4 HP (13.8), 120V sump pump were to be connected to a duplex receptacle, how would this work if the circuit breaker would be 35 amps (13.8 x 2.5) yet the duplex receptacle would be just 20 amp?
A language change in the 2023 code to 210.21(B)(3) says otherwise. You can not protect a 15 amp duplex receptacle or 20 amp receptacle with larger than a 20 amp overcurrent device.
