I'm doing an inspection in a class I div II location and the circulation pump in the skid doesn't have any listings or hazardous location designations so I told them to replace it. The manufacturer pointed to NEC 500.125(B). It does seem to be a squirrel cage induction motor without any brushes or sliding contacts, but are there any other characteristics I need to check for? Attached are pictures of the motor itself and its nameplate.

In this case, no. Space heaters can sometimes be an issue.

In general, NEMA motors aren't listed at all except for Division 1; they aren't usually listed even for "ordinary locations".

BTW, if you are an inspector, "Division" is identified with an Arabic numeral ("1" or "2"); "Class" is identified with a Roman numeral ("I", "II", or "III"). No biggie, but if you're going to be in the business.

Well, I'm a third-party inspector so at least I'm not making the government look bad :)

Thanks for the info, I'm getting a crash course since all the motors I've seen in the past were UL listed for class I div 2 and I didn't realize there were exceptions.

Love to see a photo of a UL listed Class I, Division 2 motor. CSA maybe. Make sure the logo is one of these that indicates "U.S." certification.

EDIT ADD: For that really professional look, "Class" and "Division" are capitalized. (They may be abbreviated, "Cl" or Div"."):)
