In teaching a class I was asked if there was a Code definition of a "motor operated appliance". I fail to find one.
The discussion revolved around an air handler. Art 440 notes that such an apparatus is not covered by that Article but rather by Art 422 or 430. Is there any written guideline that would clarify a air handler as "motor operated" and governed by Art 430 rules or an "appliance" under Article 430 ?

Not sure of the article.
But it could fall under fastened in place. Or Heating and Cooling equipment. What code cycle are you teaching?

422.3 says that Article 430 shall apply to motor-operated appliances. Perhaps it's not clear because 422.10(A) says that Article 430 only applies to motor-operated appliances that do not have marked ratings.

Thanks. I think that solves the particular question I was asked. Most the air handlers I see are marked so your reference applies
